The history of Bamburgh Castle

Few landmarks in the UK are as awe-inspiring as Bamburgh Castle. Perched on a volcanic outcrop, it has dominated the Northumberland coastline for over 1,400 years. With its dramatic silhouette, Bamburgh Castle is not only a striking example of medieval architecture but also holds a treasure trove of history.

Bamburgh Castle's history dates back to the 6th century when it was the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia. It was later destroyed by the Vikings in 993 but rose again during the Norman period. The Normans rebuilt it as a powerful fortress, and it has since undergone many changes and restorations, evolving into the impressive structure we see today.
