Built into and on top of the medieval walls, this cottage has panoramic views spanning over the estuary, functioning port and the three bridge, a great base to explore Berwick-upon-Tweed.

It's not every night you get to sleep within a city's fortified ramparts. This period cottage is built into the Elizabethan walls of charming Berwick-upon-Tweed – originally built to keep the Scots out. The cosy property sleeps four as well as two dogs, and is perfect for exploring this pretty estuary town, famous for its three historic bridges crossing the river. But that's not all – staying here also enables you to discover the county's rural delights, including its award-winning stretch of coastline and sparsely populated Northumberland National Park (18 miles).

Enter the property directly from the historical Quay Walls. There's a roomy open-plan kitchen/diner with all the facilities you'd expect at home, including an electric oven and microwave. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch in the dining area, with views over the Tweed estuary as your backdrop. In the evenings, relax in front of the Smart TV in the lounge, or play board games in the separate snug.

Berwick-upon-Tweed is just 3 miles south of England's border with Scotland. The town has plenty to offer the experience-hungry visitor; visit the ruined castle (0.5 miles) or take a stroll along the River Tweed – there's a circuit that takes in all three bridges. The town has four sandy beaches as well as museums, or see what's on at the Maltings Theatre. Head into the Cheviot Hills (25.5 miles) if you're after a satisfying hike through impressive scenery, or visit castles at Bamburgh (19 miles) or Alnwick (30 miles) to learn more about the region's history. Holy Island, accessible via a causeway, is also worth a trip for its tidal mudflats, saltmarshes and wide array of wildlife. Make sure you check the tides before you go so you don't get caught out.

Lovely holiday accommodation and I would highly recommend it. The owner has provided everything you need, and even left a few food and drink treats as a 'welcome'.

The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the town and nearby walks. Very comfortable, well equipped and clean - a real home from home feel to it. Parking nearby (not next to the cottage) but not a problem as once parked up, everything in the town is within reach on foot, with many places dog friendly. 100% would recommend

This property was in a great location, within a minute or two of the shops in town and on the town wall (the walk around the town wall is very interesting if you like history). Parking is easy after 5:00 p.m. and early in the morning but during the day time the car park fills up with people visiting the town (the car park is one minute away from thRead moree property). We had an excellent time at Quay Walls. A perfect base from which to explore beautiful Northumberland. The cottage had everything we needed and was deceptively spacious. All the essentials were there so we didnt need to worry about bringing things like wash up liquid. There were plenty of towels, a great TV and internet access. The property was lovely and we enjoyed being there. It had everything you needed for a great stay and all of the rooms were well appointed. The town is warm and friendly and the situation of the property on the town wall was perfect. Great location and in particular for dog walking. Car parking is a little walk away so suitcases etc have to be carried up to property. Noisy construction site to rear does spoil peacefulness during the day but all in all , recommend ed.
