This spacious farmhouse in the heart of a national park sleeps up to ten (as well as three canine companions), so is ideal for a large group. Make the most of the spectacular countryside by day, and relax in a glorious traditional setting in the evenings. If you're organising a walking holiday or a birthday event for the extended family, this gorgeous period house is the perfect springboard for discovering the joys of Northumberland as well as the hilly Scottish Borders.

The interior, original features like stone walls, window seats and wide fireplaces add to the welcoming atmosphere that'll make you feel right at home. It's beautifully decorated with wooden furniture and cosy sofas speckled with cushions. The farmhouse kitchen, equipped with an AGA and a pantry which is bound to please the chefs amongst you, is great for enjoying hot drinks and socialising, with its island and seating area. Enjoy group meals in the spacious dining room – perfect if you're celebrating a birthday or anniversary. After dinner, retire to the cosy snug with a novel or doze by the wood burner, dreaming of tomorrow.

The house is on the edge of the pretty Catcleugh Reservoir, which can be seen from the grounds. You'll be spoilt for choice for walking trails – the house is on one of the remotest sections of the Pennine Way, a 268-mile route from Derbyshire to Scotland. For a cultural day out, drive across the border to the Scottish town of Jedburgh (16 miles) and visit the impressive ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian abbey.

Excellent country house in a great location. Very relaxing week exploring the local area. So many birds singing. There are barn owls nesting in the barn opposite. We also saw puffins flying over the reservoir. All in all, a fantastic holiday was had by all
