For those interested in history and walking, the Northumberland National Park is easily reached via Great Tosson, 1.5 miles away, where you can view the remnants of the once impressive Tosson Tower fortress that protected the land from invaders. Hepple, 7 miles away, has a second fortress known as the Woodhouses Bastle which will appeal to budding historians too.
