Let Warkworth be your base with a stay at this lovely cottage, set on a stone terrace on the village’s edge. Nearby, you’ll have easy access to riverside paths (350 metres), a ruined castle (0.5 miles), and a gorgeous sandy beach (1 mile). With space for four guests over two bedrooms, this rustic home works well for couples or small families.
On arrival, step down into the entrance hall and then again into the lounge, which feels cosy thanks to soft seating, sash windows with wooden shutters, and a fireplace with a wood burner-effect electric fire. Flick on the TV, pop on a DVD, or round everyone up for a Nintendo Wii tournament. A small step leads into the spacious kitchen/diner with a farmhouse table for four, and beyond that sits the fabulous family bathroom, complete with a double walk-in shower and a free-standing bath. Head up the cottage-style stairs to find two peaceful bedrooms: a master king-size room and a flexible twin that converts to a super-king-size on request, with a convenient WC set between the two. Back on the ground floor, the rear hallway leads to an enclosed patio where you can sit out and eat in good weather. Parking is on-street and subject to availability.
Head to the vibrant fishing port of Amble (2 miles), where you can pick up fresh fish or hop on a boat to Coquet Island – hopefully you’ll spot some of the resident puffins and other seabirds while you’re there. Venture to Druridge Bay (5 miles), known for its stretch of unspoiled sandy coastline, with water sports and brilliant birdwatching possible. Tee off at Alnmouth Golf Club (5 miles) or explore the iconic Alnwick Castle (7.5 miles) – a must-visit for Harry Potter fans.
