This location is excellent for walkers, who can enjoy plenty of trails through scenic hills and valleys. Explore the ancient woodlands and the gorge carved by the River Allen at the National Trust Allen Banks and Staward Gorge (6.5 miles).

This characterful property, set over two levels, has a homely feel, blending a cottage style with contemporary comforts to ensure a memorable stay. After a day of adventure, relax in front of the TV in the welcoming open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. The exposed beams bring a warm, intimate, and private feel as you relax on the comfortable seating. At one end of the open-plan living room, you will find everything you need to rustle up tasty treats in the compact kitchen. Enjoy a romantic meal for two at the dining table. From this room, a staircase leads to the first-floor double bedroom, while a contemporary shower room with WC completes the first floor. Sit out on the shared, paved patio area with picnic tables, fire up the BBQ and dine alfresco on fine days.

Delve into the local history with a visit to Housesteads Roman Fort (8 miles) or Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum (4.5 miles), rich in living archaeology. If you enjoy water sports, spend the day at Talkin Tarn Country Park (11.5 miles) to enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or a walk around the woodlands. My dog and I spent a wonderful few days at Smithy Cottage, Ald Craig Cottages. My dog especially enjoyed the field where she could run free. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and is well placed for tourist destinations and walking.
