Events not to be missed this month!

Kirkley Hall Countryside Festival – 18th May
Kirkley Hall hosts their annual one day countryside festival on 18th May. Visitors can look forward to a fun day our for all the family including entry into the Zoological Gardens, a variety of stalls selling arts, crafts and food and land based skills displays including horse riding , tree climbing, dog agility and much more. Entry is only £3pp.
Wild Week at Belsay 24th May to 1st June
The Wildman of Belsay is a character illustrated in the Middleton Family’s Coat of Arms. He was of great importance to the family and can be found in paintings and stone carvings, some of which can still be seen today in the Castle.
To celebrate the installation of the Wildman statue in Belsay’s Hall, we’re going wild this half term! Imagine if a 'wildman' still roamed the grounds of Belsay, where would he live? Amongst the deep, cavernous Quarry Garden in a hovel, lair or den? Join artist den-builder, Chris Harman, as he’ll show children (big and small) how to build their very own den.
South Shields Food and Drink Festival 24th – 26th May
The Proper Food and Drink Festival will take place this year in Bents Park, bringing in 70 gourmet food and drink traders, as well as bars and entertainment.
At the free, three-day event in South Shields, about 50 stalls will exhibit food and drink, and there will be about 20 hot food and drink stalls.
Georgian Country Fair, Beamish Museum – 29th May until 1st June
Experience a fair like no other as The Squire of Pockerley sets about hiring his staff for the coming months! There’s also a selection of other great attractions including a Punch and Judy show, market stalls, fire eating shows, traditional games and fairground rides.
Centre for Life – from 17th May
Gunther Von Hagens' Bodyworlds Vital exhibition is on at the Centre for Life this May Celebrating the complexity, beauty and potential of the human body, it brings together a collection of real human bodies which have been donated and preserved through Plastination, a ground-breaking method for specimen preservation.
Seven Stories - Moving Stories Exhibition - throughout May
Moving Stories is a brand new exhibition to Seven Stories The exhibition will focus on different aspects of storytelling and featured stories include Alice in Wonderland, The Gruffalo and The Borrowers as well as fairy tales including Snow White, Cinderella and Shrek. With 7 floors to explore including the creative station, the Cafe, the Artist's Attic, Book Lab and Story Den, there are lots for children to see and do!
Magic Worlds - throughout May
The V&A Museum of Childhood touring exhibition Magic Worlds is currently at Great North Museum this May. Immerse yourself in the imaginary worlds of witches, wizards, fairies, elves, dragons, magicians and illusionists. On display will be costumes, tricks, paintings, ceramics, beautifully illustrated books and posters, games, optical toys and dramatic puppets. There is dressing up for all ages - including grown ups!
