During the early medieval period the coastal village of Bamburgh was at the centre of Royal Kingdom of Northumbria. The castle here is one of the most impressive in the country, steeped in history and intrigue – a must visit for people visiting Northumberland.

Built in the 12th Century, Bamburgh Castle is a breath taking landmark on the Northumberland Coast. Built high on a 180 foot high basalt crag, this spectacular castle is now owned by the National Trust is open throughout the summer months and is a must for all visitors to the area.

Bamburgh beach is truly outstanding and was awarded the fourth best beach in Britain for both its beauty and cleanliness. Stay at a cottage in Bamburgh and have easy access to miles of unspoilt coastline, sweeping beaches, rocky shores and extensive sand dunes.

Bamburgh is served by a network of public rights of way with 10.55km of public footpath, 3.35km of Bridleway and 1.06km of unclassified roads. Go for an unforgettable hike, stroll or ride through this area of outstanding beauty.

If you fancy a go at surfing, local surfing schools run courses from the beach with hire of surfing equipment available.

Visit the nearby horse riding stables at Slate Hall, North Sunderland and enjoy a beach ride along the beach at Bamburgh and back to the stables via open countryside. Riding lessons are also available.

There’s plenty here for sports fanatics too Tennis courts beside the castle can booked at the reception of The Victoria Hotel for only £5 per hour. Bamburgh is also home to one of Northumberland’s finest golf courses. Perched on a basalt outcrop Bamburgh Castle Golf Club is often referred to as the most picturesque course in England and is a wonderful experience for any golfer. Be sure to book ahead! Northumberland is fast becoming a favorite spot for cyclists as there are a large number of safe, signed routes through some truly stunning surroundings suitable for a range of ages and abilities.
